Leadership & Legacy of Juwan Skeens

For Juwan K. Skeens, public service isn't a career, it's a lifelong commitment to the neighborhoods that shaped him.

Born and raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Juwan is a proud product of Boston Public Schools, attending the Joseph Lee School, Timilty Middle School, and Excel High School, where he served as Senior Class President. As a student leader, he worked alongside classmates and school administrators to launch a Tardy Buy-Back Program that contributed to a 25% increase in graduation rates, demonstrating early on his belief that real change begins by listening, collaborating, and finding innovative solutions.

From 2016 to 2018, Juwan served as Neighborhood Liaison to then Boston City Council President Andrea Campbell, acting as the direct connection between City Hall and neighborhoods across Boston. He worked with nearly 20 neighborhood associations each month, attended Zoning Board of Appeal hearings, responded to constituent concerns, and advocated for responsible development that reflected the priorities of residents. During his tenure, he also helped organize the Boston Youth Expo alongside the offices of then At-Large City Councilors Ayanna Pressley, Annissa Essaibi George, and Michelle Wu, creating opportunities for thousands of young people to connect with educational, career, and community resources.

Juwan also supported the successful passage of Boston's Community Preservation Act (CPA), which established a dedicated funding source for affordable housing, historic preservation, parks, and open space throughout the city. After its passage, he continued advocating for projects that would directly benefit the community, including CPA funding for the historic preservation of his home church, Christ Temple Church of Personal Experience, and the mixed-income housing development at 872 Morton Street, which will include the future Steven P. Odom Serenity Garden, a memorial honoring his childhood best friend while creating a peaceful space for healing, reflection, and community gathering.

Committed to creating lasting opportunities for Boston residents, Juwan founded By Believe Inspire Repeat Tree House (BBIRTH, Inc.), a Boston-certified minority-owned nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth, families, seniors, and underserved communities through education, workforce development, health and wellness, civic engagement, and community partnerships. Under his leadership, BBIRTH continues to build programs and resources that strengthen neighborhoods and create pathways to success.

Juwan has remained deeply involved in civic life as a lifelong member of the Redefining Our Community Neighborhood Association, a Board Member of the Codman Square Neighborhood Council, a Leader with Prophetic Resistance Boston, a Commissioner for the Boston People's Reparations Commission, and a dedicated community advocate. Through these leadership roles, he works alongside residents, nonprofit organizations, businesses, faith leaders, and government partners to improve public safety, expand affordable housing, strengthen education, advance racial equity, promote economic opportunity, and ensure every community has a seat at the table.

Juwan earned his Associate Degree in Business Management from Southern New Hampshire University and is completing his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, further strengthening his commitment to ethical leadership, sound public administration, and effective governance.

Today, Juwan is running for Massachusetts State Senate because he believes government should be Reliable, Accessible, Transparent, and Effective. His campaign is rooted in the belief that the best solutions come from the people, and that by bringing communities together, we can build a stronger, more equitable future for everyone.
